A brief history of ASL

American Sign Language (ASL) is a complete, natural language used by Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people across the U.S. and parts of Canada. With its own grammar and rich visual-spatial structure, ASL connects generations, cultures, and communities. Today, ASL is one of the most studied languages in North America and an essential tool for accessible communication.
